My Experience With Writing for Engineers

While applying for classes, i was hesitant taking this class because i believe English Isn’t my strongest suit. However, this is possibly the most interesting English class I have ever taken. I have never been a fan of reading, however writing i enjoy a lot. Another thing i have an interest in is technology, and this class is basically a perfect fit for me. It might semi challenging at some points however, the challenge is the fun part about it because this class makes it that interesting. We talk a lot about technology and very vivid descriptions as to what they do, as well as memos where we discuss possible ideas as to how to improve an item or such.

Our first assignment was a Technical Description which can be found here. A Technical Description is basically the deconstruction and analysis of an item or thing. In this case, I chose to pick apart a simple padlock. Choosing a padlock meant this task was going to be easy but not too easy, as the padlock may look small, it has an intricate and special design to allow the lock from locking and unlocking. This Technical Description really boosted my enthusiasm for this class because this assignment was actually pretty fun and exciting to make. It allowed m to have a creative writing side while still having a very factual and informative essay. This made me look forward for our next assignment.

The second assignment was a Memo which can be found here, which is basically like a “request for change” in a way. Like a critical analysis of a certain aspect of something as well as proposal as to how you might change it, or what can we do to change it. My Memo was about the windows in the NAC Cafeteria. My concern was that these windows, as aesthetic as they are, might raise concerns when the heat will soon rise. The Windows will allow the heat to come in, however not escape, raising the temperature in the cafeteria and thus, drawing it students away. I thought this problem was interesting and so I proposed a new window design or even curtains or blinds that would not allow the suns rays from getting through. Thus, doing this would allow for a better school experience as well as prevent students from using the cafeteria stairs as a familiar hangout. Doing this memo allowed me to critically analyze and make critical thinking decisions in order to find a problem and solve it. A technique that is required for those going into the engineering field. I found this assignment to very challenging however, extremely fun. It tested my analyzing skills as well as solving a problem that would benefit everyone. Having this ability will allow me to be a better problem solver as well as help us with our next assignments.

The third assignment of the class and also the only group assignment is the Lab Report . The Lab Report is tied together with the Engineering Report but they are separate assignments on its own. So, the Lab Report we had was based on the Memo of “How can we make Transportation cheaper for CCNY students” In our group we decided that creating a MetroCard program in which students who lived outside of a 2 mile radius would be eligible for this program. For the MetroCard Program itself, it will be in a form of an ID in which a NFC chip will be implanted where this would allow access to any subway. For our Lab report we needed to create a set distance in which this program will not be available to this said range. We agreed to a 2 mile radius (It is shown Here) where we deemed it the fair distance in which if you live with in the 2 mile radius you will not be eligible to for this Program. Using this info we then calculated how much the school will have to pay in order to satisfy the needs of this program. This will be talked about in the Engineering Report. Overall, this Lab report was fairly difficult, mainly because this topic itself is less of an engineering report and more of a financial report as well as there will be a lot of management going on. The Engineering Report, however, will provide a more detail explanation as to how this program will work. overall, this Lab Report tested our team work, as well as our knowledge of our school and its financial situation as well as using demographics and data to help us find a balanced middle ground in which this program will work.

Our Fourth and Final assignment is a continuation of the Lab Report, The Engineering Report. In the Engineering Report, we decided that there will be a two mile radius in which students outside this radius will not be eligible for this program. This is a counter measure to make sure no one is abusing this system. We found that if you live within two miles of the school, this already gives you an advantage Vs. the other 90% of students outside this radius. Our next step was to figure out how this plan would come to be. We established an elaborate plan that included a very specific, heavily trained team in which they will manage all the software and back end of the ID chips history as well as its tracking system. People like the a CFO and a Project Manager will be required to make this operation run smoothly. Our next objective if to figure out when or if this project will be more of a liability or more of an asset. We figure this out by figuring out its short term and long term use, how much will we lose, and how much (if possible) will we profit. Our group has determined that the total cost will be an outstanding cost of: $674, 598. (this is includes the staff the chips as well as the IT professionals on board). Now Of course this itself was a bit costly however we determined that this service will bring in approximately $1,350,000-$1,552,500 a annually. Which is obviously great profit for the school, as well as extra funds to further help the school. All in all, this Engineering Report was extremely challenging however extremely fun to do. Not only did we have to devise an issue and solution to this school, our job was to be able to persuade the rest of our class mates if they were able to support our idea as well. This took a lot of critical thinking as well as a lot of persuasion tactics in order to help people understand and see how our idea can come to life. The reaction was fairly neutral as this plan did receive some credible feedback such as how will people with work schedules be able to use this card, etc.

Altogether, this class was extremely helpful and extremely interesting to be apart of. It made me realize that the Engineering field does require some sort of creativity to it as well as heavy use of critical thinking and analysis. Because of this, i am looking forward to pursue something in the engineering field, as I am extremely fascinated with this topic itself. Coming to this class i was first skeptical and worried if i will fail this class due to the fact that I am not a strong English student. This is now not the case, in the end i realized that this class itself brought out the best of me, it allowed me to to use my creative writing skills in pair with my analysis and critical thinking skills, which were skills i needed to work on. Taking this class greatly improved my ability to work with teams as well. I felt that our presentation went smoothly as well as the fact that our plan was pretty solid for a Legitimate Engineering Proposal. This class has positively impacted me because prior to this class I was not able to Keep up with any English assignment because i felt that these assignments were extremely lackluster. In the case of Writing For Engineers, these topics piqued my interest and therefore i was able to put all my effort in to these topics. Because of this class, i feel that the Engineering field is for me and thanks to this class i will be looking forward to pursuing this field.
